Jigs and reels I play
I learnt to play the descant recorder in the Junior School, with Peter Chapman. He was a marvellous teacher. He also taught English and he taught us the Phonetic Alphabet. Something different!
I belong to the Melbourne Savage Club, and on Bloomsday I usually get asked to play some jigs and reels. Here are the music books I use for this purpose. I got them when I was travelling in Ireland with my then girlfriend Helen, in 1976. They are written, of course, for the traditional tin whistle, of which I possess some, however I am more comfortable on the recorder, and it seems to work OK doing this. As far as I know, the three books are the the complete set of this course.
There are so many great tunes in these books that I don’t need to go further afield for my purposes. The fact that they are graded facilitates constructing a set for performance.
Here are some examples.
Book 1 Nr 18, “Dan O’Keefe’s Slides”
